In response to J. Barrios’ question, I reached out to Chatsworth NC to inquire about this year’s trip, and was told that nothing is planned at this time.
That must have been the case on Friday when I wrote about SB 50 , which would have prohibited police from stopping motorists and bicyclists for minor offenses, with the goal of preventing arbitrary stops.
But a comment by someone who calls himself An Observer shows that my understanding of the bill was wrong.
Your assumption that SB 50, if passed, would prevent “stopping a bicycle registration, or running a stop sign or riding a fish” is incorrect. It has already been banned; Cal. Rev. Code § 39002, amended by last year’s AB 1909, states that a city or county “shall not prohibit the operation of bicycles without a permit.” The latter two would not be affected by SB 50, which includes a definition of “minimum violation” based on two sections of the Vehicle Code related to bicycle accessories and helmets; shall not include violations related to the operation of bicycles in general: “(E) Violations related to bicycle equipment or operations under sections 21201 and 21212.” https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id =202320240SB50 Peace officers will still have the authority to stop bicycles for violations of other laws, including Cal. Rev. Code § 22450 (stop signs), § 21202 (right turn or curb), or in this case, §§ 22107-22111 (turn and stop hand signals).

Zachary Rynew is a longtime Los Angeles bike advocate who runs the website Gravel Bike California, which covers the area’s many gravel rides. He has been riding two wheels since he was in grade school and says that riding on noisy roads brings him back to when he was a child. It also makes LA travel more efficient. “I was driving from the San Fernando Valley to UCLA and I cut my car in half and went through Fryman Canyon Park, then Franklin Canyon,” he said. Southern California, Rynew believes, has more road opportunities. “You can make your trip over the Santa Monica Mountains to the San Gabriels and the mountains above Redlands and Chino,” he said. “I like the variety here.”
