According to the suit, Battle hired and fired Adler within 72 hours to represent him in a car accident lawsuit.

Arguing that he was not fired for “reasonable cause,” Adler is now seeking one-third of Battle’s legal fees, “despite the fact that he was fired before any actual legal work was done and that he did not contribute to the recovery obtained by the new trial attorney.” the lawsuit says.

“Plaintiff has never spoken to any attorney retained by Defendant, but is demanding more than a thousand dollars … threatening a civil lawsuit,” the lawsuit states.

In filing the lawsuit, Adler claims Battle is trying to “avoid paying a small portion of the attorney fees” he owes his company, according to a court filing.

Of course, this tactic was not without its fair share of social pressure not to go public at the time due to the stigma attached to it by other lawyers. Adler was also influenced by TV parodies, even being called “Joe Adler” in Beavis & Butthead magazine. As Michael notes, “you know you’ve made it when a national TV show reaches out to you.”

Michael and Adler agree that having so many people in a company involves a lot of moving parts. However, as Michael points out, it can be “much harder to run a company than to be a lawyer”.

Adler further describes how his company has created a departmental system to take care of customers every step of the way. Its reception desk has specialists who only answer calls from new customers and is separate from the operator who answers all calls. A packaging department with specialists in preparing settlements and collecting all hospital documents is only the tip of the iceberg when you look at the organization it has built.

Both Adler and Michael reflect on the importance of treating people with respect, even answering the phone.
